Many of you have asked about the commemorative marker location and design and rest assured we are making progress.  For the past nine months the Gunrunners Alumni Association has been working steadily preparing plans to obtain approval for placement of a Memorial Marker in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens (LMG) in Jacksonville, NC.  On September 29th 2023, the Association presented our plan to the LMG Steering Committee and obtained agreement as to the appropriateness of the 269 Memorial Marker for the Gardens.

After additional discussions with the Steering Committee, the MCB Staff and the Eastern Area legal counsel, we submitted a "formal gift proposal" of a 269 Commemorative Memorial for inclusion in LMG to the Marine Corps on March 2nd.  That package is currently being reviewed and once the proposal package is endorsed by the CG Marine Corps Base, the approval process will continue up to HQMC and ultimately to the Secretary of the Navy for final disposition.  This review process will likely take months but we are optimistic that our proposal will be accepted and that construction could begin shortly thereafter.

The Campaign

The HMA/HMLA-269 Gunrunners Alumni Association is conducting a campaign to establish a commemorative marker to honor the 51 years of service of the squadron and to appropriately honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice either in training, during contingency operations or in combat while assigned to 269.

The Commemorative Marker Campaign will cover the expenses associated with the location, design and construction of a monument which will be an appropriate tribute to the Gunrunners' long legacy and many contributions.
